Riviera Utilities, a utility provider servicing Baldwin County in Alabama, had suffered a data breach that exposed customer information following the email accounts of their staff hacked.

The corporation revealed that last Friday night (May 2), an attempt of unauthorized access was identified in the internal database.

Personal information about a "limited number of individuals" was exposed, including names, Social Security numbers, driver's license or state identification numbers, passport numbers, medical information, health insurance information, credit or debit card numbers, expiration dates, and CVVs of credit or debit cards.

Riviera Utilities mentioned that the components of personal information differed for every client.

On March 28, 2022, a forensic examination found that the email accounts were accessed on or around October 17, 2021. On April 26, those impacted by the incident were contacted.

Riviera Utilities said in a statement that "this access did not cover systems that store auto-pay, bank draft data, or other personally identifiable information"_ Additionally, this security problem did not affect any personal information accessed or uploaded via Riviera's website.

"We do not indicate that this event resulted in the abuse of any personal information. However, we contacted people whose information may have been included in the files available in the affected staff email accounts out of an excess of caution."

Individuals impacted by the incident will get free credit monitoring services.
