Largest DDoS Attack

A large service provider was targeted by attackers in what is believed to be the largest DDoS attack ever

Recently, attackers have targeted certain websites hosted by a large service provider in what is believed to be the biggest DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack ever.

##What has happened?

The hosting provider had been hit with a 1.44 Tbps DDoS attack in the first attack. The second attack was carried out at another website with 500 Mbps operated by the same company. According to Akamai, those specific websites were chosen for social purposes and not much about the attacks was revealed.

##Details:

  1. Various forms of data were used, showing that the attackers were faithfully doing their homework.

  2. While a typical attack consisted of just 2-3 types of traffic, this one contained 9 different types of traffic and the traffic surge lasted an hour.

  3. The different devices that the threat actors used were sourced from different regions.

##Notable DDoS Attacks

  1. It would be a crime to not mention the 2018 1.3 Tbps DDoS attacks against GitHub while talking about the biggest DDoS attacks. The Memcached reflection drove this, sending packets at a rate of 126.9 million per second.

  2. Attackers attempted to kill the HHS web site in March this year.

  3. A successful DDoS attack was carried out on the Assistance Publique-Hospitaux de Paris hospital company, based in Paris.

##A word:

The global shift from home to work life is entirely internet-dependent. People work, shop, and study online, reflected in the targets of threat actors and recent DDoS attacks. An organization can handle such attacks by putting in place the appropriate controls to block malicious traffic to avoid overwhelming their services.
