Volkswagen's U.S. unit was hit by a data breach at the merchant side that affected over 3.3 million clients and potential customers in North America.
The data breach primarily targeted most of the current or potential customers of Audi, one of the luxury brands of the German automaker.
Volkswagen Group America officially announced on Friday post detecting unauthorized third party access into its system gaining access to limited personal information about customers and prospective buyers from a vendor that its Audi Volkswagen brands and some U.S. and Canadian dealers used for digital sales and marketing.
This information was collected for sales and marketing between 2014 and 2019 and is stored in an electronic file the vendor left unsecured.
The company told regulators that most customers only have phone numbers and email addresses that might be affected by the data breach. In some cases, the data also includes information about the purchased, leased, or requested information.
Volkswagen stated that 90,000 Audi customers and potential buyers affected sensitive data related to purchase or lease eligibility. Volkswagen said it would provide these people with free credit protection services.
In more than 95% of cases, sensitive data includes driver’s license numbers. A few records include other data, such as date of birth, social security number, and account number.
The automaker does not believe that Canada involves sensitive information. More than 3.1 million people are affected in the United States. Volkswagen believes that these data were obtained sometime between August 2019 and May this year, when the automaker determined the source of the incident event.
