Web Hosting Canada (WHC), a web hosting service, disclosed an incident that critically interrupting operations on Saturday, affecting the availability of web hosting and reseller hosting accounts on WHC systems in the Montreal datacenter.
WHC hasn't yet declared whether the incident occurred because of an attack or a technical issue.
The company stated that _"We currently have all hands on deck working on the problem but the situation is serious. Our initial attempt to repair the data on our backup servers has failed and at this point, the likelihood of successfully restoring account data from these servers is very low."_
WHC is constantly trying to restore the data from four servers out of their total servers, while five had their backups partially or completely destroyed with little hope of recovery.
Reports suggest that, since the incident involved the damaging of the backups, it might have been due to a malicious attack. Hackers generally strike on weekends.
Several ransomware groups have previously utilized the technique involving the destruction of backup servers to extort the victims. Dave Hatter, a cybersecurity expert at IntrustIT, stated that _"The way WHC covered the incident does resemble a malicious attack. While I suppose it could be something else, it looks like a ransomware attack to me,” Hatter wrote CyberNews in an email."_
Web Hosting Canada has refused to give any information regarding the incident as the investigation is still ongoing. All the clients of WHC are furious and have been contemplating on social media with opinions ranging from electrical damage to a rogue ex-employee.
