Canon, one of the market leaders in optical and imaging products appears to have experienced a severe ransomware attack. This was confirmed by an internal memo, with Maze threat actors who took the entire credit.

An external cybersecurity firm has been hired to investigate this matter further and to find out the culprits responsible for the same.

Canon has now resumed back to its services at the normal pace. But, on the website of Canon's last status update, it was revealed by Canon that an issue that involved over 10GB of data storage was put under investigation thereby what led to the temporary suspension of mobile apps and the online platform related to the same.

Canon has said that according to them, a few of the photo and image files that were saved prior to the 16th of June were lost. But they have also given a confirmation and guarantee of a no data breach of the same. According to Canon, right now, thumbnails of all of the lost image files can be viewed but these image files can neither be downloaded nor be transferred elsewhere. In cases where the user tried to download or transfer such image files, an error will occur in doing the same.

This, in itself, may sound and suggest that is a mere technical issue with glitches in the back-end servers. But, at the same time, an internal memo was obtained by the publication and it warned the employees of company-wide Information Technology issues, including applications, Microsoft Teams, and email addresses.

It is believed by Canon that Maze is to one to be blamed for considering the data breach. The company claims this after the threat group told Canon that they had stolen about 10Tera Bytes of data after they launched a very successful ransomware attack against the company Canon.

This group, Maze target such big multi-national firms and infuse their systems with malware and thereby cyber attacking their system. Then, they threaten the firms to release the data only once the payment is made.

Canon has now said that they are further looking into this matter and are currently trying to investigate the gravity of the situation.
