The Chinese government denied all accusations against them that stated that Chinese hackers spearheaded the massive power failure that destabilized Mumbai last year. In fact, the spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry remarked that these allegations against a nation are “highly irresponsible”

"As a staunch defender of cybersecurity, China firmly opposes and cracks down on all forms of cyberattacks. Speculation and fabrication have no role to play on the issue of cyberattacks," the Chinese spokesperson stated. He further added, "Highly irresponsible to accuse a particular party with no sufficient evidence around,".

This remark from the Chinese government was actually a follow up after the New York Times wrote in one of their reports that during the times of tremendous tensions in Indo-China border in Ladakh, last year, India’s critical power grid system was attacked by a particular Chinese government-linked group of hackers, through malware. Suspicions arose as to whether the power failure in Mumbai was actually an outcome of the attack that was coordinated by the Chinese hackers.

Maharashtra Energy Minister Nitin Raut later confirmed that the Mumbai power outage in October 2020 was indeed a result of the Chinese conspiracy.

"There is truth in the claims made by NYT. We had formed three committees to inquire into the matter. We will receive a detailed report from the cyber department but based on the preliminary information I have, there definitely was a cyber attack and it was a sabotage," asserted Nitin Raut.

The power outage in India’s national capital, Mumbai, on October 12, 2020, utterly destabilized a city of 20 million people during the Covid 19 pandemic times. It stopped trains on tracks, compelled the hospitals to function with the emergency generation, and also had hit the economy very hard. Initially, the cyber department of the city had raised a suspicion that this might be a result of a malware attack.

Later, Recorded Future, a Massachusetts-based company that specializes in the analysis of various online threats, also detected the flow of malware.
